Barasoain Church
Barasoain Church is located in the town of Malolos, Bulacan. It was built by Augustinians in 1859 and was built to provide shelter and needs of the people. The church is made out of bamboo and nipa, and also has a bell tower. Barasoain was nearly destroyed several times due to an earthquake and a wild fire but was immediately repaired.
The name of the church was made from the word “Baras ng Suwail” which means “dungeon of the defiant”. The church was built in a place where there were a lot of nationalistic Filipinos who fought against the Spaniards who oppressed a lot of people in the country. Though, according to the former president of Bulacan Historical, Inc. the name of the church was made because some Spanish missionaries saw similarities between the town of Malolos and their town in Spain, which was called Barasoain.
Barasoain church and the town where it is located were filled with people who are willing to fight for their country. Their blood and sweat were fruitful because they were able to attain the freedom they wanted. Barasoain is a very significant place in the Philippines because it is the birthplace of the First Philippine Republic.
